Varicraft The Bouncer Squirrel Proof Feeder (Model SBF-1)

The Vari-Craft Bouncer has a simple, effective design that keeps squirrels, grackles, jays and starlings out of your seed supply. The four counter-weighted perches will support all of the smaller songbirds and even most cardinals but the weight of squirrels and larger birds will cause the perch to collapse to an inaccessible position underneath the feeder. The undesirable guest is ejected. Powdercoated zinc diecast top and bottom with stainless steel roof clips. 5" diameter x 18" long lexan tube provides large seed capacity while preventing squirrels from hanging off the roof and reaching the seed ports. No shocking electric charge. No batteries required. No springs.

  • Comes fully assembled

  • Hanging Feeder

  • Easy to fill - feeds all types of wild bird seed

  • Allows song birds and most cardinals to feed but keeps big birds and squirrels out

  • Holds 9 lbs of seed

5NO SQUIRRELS  Nov 17, 2007

No Squirrels, No Kidding.
Great Bird feeder. It is big, and the squirrels hate it. They don't even bother after a while. Quality is superb. I have tried everything, and this thing works. I got it at Sears for 37 bucks (on line). Get two before they realize the priced it wrong.

5the best  Feb 21, 2009

I have tried them all and this is by far the best squirrel prof feeder I have found. My brother in law has one also with the same success. It also keeps the heavier(grackles, blue jays) out so the smaller birds can enjoy. The birds absolutely love it,and the squirrels can eat the left over on the ground.I rate this an A+

5It works! It is an excellent feeding system.  Mar 20, 2012

I have had a Bouncer for four years. It holds enough food to go almost a week. Small birds land on it. However, larger birds, such as Cardinals, are too heavy to stay on the break-away perches. However, since a bird's beak is an imperfect device, enough food falls to the ground that the larger birds can also get some without having a vulnerable non-squirrel safe unit. It has held up very well through the Vermont winters, too.

I bought this as a Christmas present for my Bird Nerd mother and it is one of the most impressive bird feeders I've ever seen. It is very big and heavy requires a sturdy structure to hang from. She already had a good pole in the backyard to hang feeders from so this went right on there. It holds a ridiculous amount of feed and since it caters more to small songbirds it takes them a while to go through it all. Now on to the meat of the review, is it indeed squirrel proof? Yes. For the first few weeks she would tell me stories of all the squirrels that tried to reach the feed only to slide off and down to the ground. She'd seen the electric feeders and the one's with the slinging mechanisms and those never really appealed to her. This however is perfectly humane and still provides vengeful entertainment as the squirrels attempt in vain to reach the seed within. To be fair she does still put a lot of seed on the ground and uneaten fruit so they can eat but just not the expensive seed she puts in the feeder. There are quite a lot of raccoons in the area as well and they've also taken their turns trying to get at it. There are two simple metal clips at the top holding down the very heavy lid. The raccoons did manage to pop off one of the clips but they did not get to the other one and the feeder was not compromised. As other reviewers have mentioned this is not a feeder for big birds. The largest bird I've seen manage to eat from it is a mockingbird. The larger birds however have no issues knocking squirrels away from the other feeders so everyone gets their share.

5So far, so good  Jun 28, 2011

Prior to purchasing this product, I did a lot of research on squirrel proof feeders. None seemed to really do the job, and I agree with others that 100% squirrel proof is probably not possible. But after just a few days, my squirrels (grey and red) seem to have given up. They get on the top of it, and there is no place for them to go except onto the ground, as the tube that holds the feed is very long and they cannot reach the perch/feed holes. Gone also are the large blue jays and grackles. They did not even try to feed from this. Even chipmunks have given up. My only concern was that my larger grosbeaks and cardinals would not be able to perch, but so far so good. This is a large, heavy product and looks like it will easily handle the winters. I will update this review if the squirrels figure out how to feed from it. GREAT PRODUCT!!!
