4Not quite a whisper, but a great filter  Oct 28, 2010
By Surveyor "Book reader"
I have a 65 gallon tank which replaced a 20 I had owned for 3 years. I had the appropriate Whisper filter on that one so I got the larger version for this one. There is no such thing as a silent filter (unless it is in another room) but the whisper does a good job of keep noise to a minimu. If you have your water level right, you do not hear the waterfall effect that others have addressed.
Also, I replaced the additional media in the filter with a better mesh to control phosphates and (hopefully) cut down on algae, and there was plenty of room for this material along with the bags and charcoal.
I had looked at the more expensive cylinder filters but after assessing the cleaning problems, the leaking problems and the overall work involved, I chose to stick with the Whisper and spend my $$ on new fish and decorations!

5Fantastic!  Dec 01, 2009

Works great. Handy slide in filter cartridges for easy and quick changes. Adjustable flow rate. Extra tubing for water intake inside tank. Super quiet! A quality product.

4Whisper filter no so whispery  May 06, 2010
By S. Ray
I have owned a whisper filter in the past and find them a superior product. So I was not hesitant to buy this one. The whisper does work better than most standard filter systems that come with aquariums these days. So thats why after 1 month I ditched the Aqueon filter system that came with the tank I purchased and switched to the Whisper filter. The only thing I would say that is negative is the sound... it isn't a whisper at all.. more like a water fall in your house. So if you find the sound of running water irritating this isn't the system for you. I find it soothing so it isn't a problem.

4It really is quiet  Feb 28, 2011
By Adena Schachner
When these filters work right, they are really quiet. They work well and do what they are supposed to do. Also, they're really cheap.

I've had two of these filters-- one that I got used, and one that I bought new.

The old one: after years of use, it was really loud at times -- this filter pulls up water using the impeller (a magnet and fan-thing that moves the water) and an 'energizer' or motor which pushes the impeller around. When the impeller becomes a bit loose, it bangs around, causing a horrible loud vibrating noise. We tried re-seating the impeller, but no luck. After investigating the price of a new impeller and a new energizer, we realized it would be about the same price to just order a whole new Whisper 60 off of Amazon.

I'm glad we did-- unlike the old Whisper 60 we had, the new one is very quiet. Still a low whirring sound, but not bothersome at all (and our couch/tv is right next to the fishtank in the living room, so we notice any extra noise).

4Gets the jobs done  Nov 13, 2010
By Hairy Colon
Replaced a old, noisey, whisper 20/40 that had suddenly lost its impeller blades. Replacement impeller was half the cost of the 60 model, a no brainer. The spare filter pads fit perfectly, and the extra filtation may make the tank stay clear longer. The downside to all of this is the noise! I can hear the rattle from across the room, it appears that the old one was not worn out, the new one is just as loud. I might try some sort of adjustment to the impeller positioning and post an update if the noise problem is solved.
