5Excellent optics  Aug 30, 2008
By SM
I wanted an affordable pair or Binoculars with zoom for a trip to the mountains in Colorado (which was cancelled, by the way!) and finally decided on the Olympus Trooper 8-16x40. I've been an Olympus fan for a long time, so the excellent optics were no surprise! The focusing and zoom are smooth and simpe. For general purposes, including amature bird-watching this is a very nice pair: bright, enough magnification/zoom within a comfortable size and weight. Excellent piece of work from Olympus.

4Great Binoculars with the price  Jun 16, 2009
By T. Vuong "T.V."
After reading many reviews, I decided on this binoculars for its price and zoom range. I purchased it new for $60 plus tax in May 2009. We went on an Alaska cruise and continued on with a RV to Denali NP. I used it almost every day extensively and I would definitely say that I am very happy with my decision. It is probably not the best binoculars but for the price and what I need for my trip, I am very happy with it.

It has great and clear optics. I love the ability to zoom in and out. It allows me to see thing with a wide view and zoom it if I see things of interest. It was great to spot eagles (In Glacier Bay NP,I was able to spot an eagle on an iceberg so far away) and big manmals in Denali. The 8x-16x is just right. At 16x, I have to be very steady. I can not see how I can get my hands to be steadier for more powerful zoom.

I would definite recommend everyone to get a zoom binos over a fixed one, it is so much more interactive and fun!!

The 40mm lens is also great. There is very little lost of light as you zoom in on a object or scen. Yes, it is just a heavier than the small compact one.

I also bought a harness for it and I would recommend that you do if you are going to carry it extensively. It takes the weight off your neck and frees your hand to do other things. The harness allows me to switch back and forth between the camera and the binos.

Two things that could be better:
1-there is a minute distortion at the very edge of the view if you look very carefully.
2-It looses focus a bit when you zoom all the way in or out. You have to refocus.

Over all, it is a great binos with its price!

5Good Binoculars  Feb 21, 2010
By Archery Dad "Archery Fan"
I used these for about 5 hours yesterday to spot arrows in targets at about 25 yards and they worked great. I especially like the ability to zoom to 16x. This made spotting the arrows very easy and I was even able to tell when an arrow was touching the line between scoring rings. I don't claim to be an expert, but for the price, these binoculars appear to be very good quality. The zoom feature works well, but you do have to adjust the focus when zooming in or out. I think that's to be expected with a manually focused piece of equipment like this and refocusing is very quick and easy. They're relatively lightweight and compact in size compared to some of the larger 50mm lense binoculars of the Porro Prism design. Overall, I'm pleased with these binoculars and recommend them to anyone looking for a reasonable quality pair of binoculars at a reasonable price.

5Excellent Price/Performance  Jan 01, 2011
By Pedro A M Vazquez
I got this bino at an airport dutty-free as an emergency replacement of my 8x40 bino that was broken by the luggage service at another airport during a trip, my main usage is for birding and outdoor. It is a very good built binocular with a very good optical performance. It produces bright and contrasted colorfull images and 8x and up to the midle of the zoom range. At 16x it still good but not as in the first half zoom range. The optics show very small achromatic aberration and the images are sharp almost from edge to edge. The body has a rubber/plastic armor protecting it that provides a good grip. The controls (dioptry, focus and interpupillary distance) are very smooth, I only miss pop-up eyecups.

5Great for the money  Aug 05, 2010
By M. Friedrich
I was a little reluctent to buy these based on some of the reviews but I did anyway. As far as I can tell the other reviews were way off base. These work great and are very easy to adjust. The image quality is good as well. No they aren't perfect but they are better than I expected for the price.
