Sunterra 337106 Prefilter Box for 500 Gallon Pond Capacity, Black

A contained body of water is subject to conditions such as dirt, insects, algae and decomposed vegetation that affect the water clarity and health. A filtration system is needed to balance the ponds ecosystem. This filtration system must match both the power of the pump and the volume of the water garden. The Pre Filter Box is for use with 200 and 320 Gallon Per Hour Fountain Pumps to provide mechanical filtration for use in water accent applications. In Mechanical filtration, the water is pumped into the filter creating the necessary pressure to begin the mechanical filtration stage. There are two phases in the mechanical filtration stage, course and fine filtration. Each phase uses a specially designed foam filter to effectively remove all sizes of unwanted debris. The pre-filter cleans ponds up to 500 gallons and is recommended for use with Sunterra pump numbers 120016 and 137016.

  • Provides mechanical filtration for water accent applications in ponds and water gardens

  • Cleans ponds up to 500 Gallons

  • Two Year Limited Warranty

2Good filter but hard to clean  Sep 30, 2008
By Richard L. Elias
This filter box is a pre-filter that draws water through two foam pads -- a coarse filter, then a fine one -- before it is drawn into the pump. My Sunterra pump includes another filter inside a snap-on housing, so the pond has three filters in all. The box filter is effective but clogs quickly. The top is held on by four screws. To clean the foam pads, you must disassemble it. Awkward. Some kind of snap-on top would be more convenient. Also, my Sunterra pump has a threaded outlet which is designed to be used with a Sunterra diverter valve . . . more than I needed or wanted! (I have a small pond.) A trip to a hardware store yielded a few plastic plumbing coupling that allow me to snap a hose onto the outlet with a quick-release coupler . . . very convenient.
I had drained the pond and refilled it before installing the Sunterra kit. It wasn't possible to drain it entirely because of the fish, however. The filter got clogged quickly even with new, clear water -- well, clearER than it was! Yesterday I drained the pond again, more thoroughly, and decided not to use the box prefilter but just the pump with its built-in filter. I can get it out by snapping off the pump housing. If it doesn't clog for a week or so, I'll try to add the prefilter again. If it does clog, I'll just go with the built-in filter.

4Good Enough  Jul 15, 2010

I have a pond and a couple of fountains. Sunterra sells products that make constructing and maintaining my "water work" projects easy at a reasonable cost.
The Prefilter Box is simple but it might be better if it had a "slide-on" or "snap-on" top instead of using screws. This is not a deal breaker, just a suggestion.

After use for about a year there have been no problems with this product. Plastic didn't crack yet.

2sunterra 337106 prefilter box  Jul 12, 2011
By CLP "CLP"
Not really happy with this pre filter box, I have another one that the top just snaps on into place, this one has 4 phillips skrews , 1 in each corner to hold the filter media and top piece of plastic, down, just a pain I'm thinking, rather than snapping the lid off to rinse the media I have to take tools with me now...like my other brand one much better. Oh and this one came with no filter media, the other had 12 bio balls, and it was 13.00. I actually thought I was buying the same thing, but it wasn't...oh well, already in the pond, just going to take extra time when I need to rinse the media every couple weeks.I used half the bioballs from my other pre filter box in the compartment in bottom where the pump sits, gives the bacteria somewhere to hold onto and colonize.

4Does the job  Sep 23, 2010
By Ryan Espy
This pre-filter box is a necessity for outdoor pond pumps that don't have a filter built in. I bought this with the Sunterra 320 mpg pump and the setup works fine. It's not the highest quality plastic, but it's affordable and should last a while. My two biggest complaints:

1. It's difficult to wire the electrical cord through the notch in the box.
2. The lid is held on by four screws, so you have to unscrew those when you want to clean the filters

Also worth noting is that the box is very light and I needed to stick a brick on top to hold it in place (which blocks some of the passage to the filter).
