Good Suet......But Very Overpriced Nov 11, 2009
By Ambergris
"John Thomas"
Every bird feeding enthusiast will eventually come to learn that suet is invaluable to your back yard menageries health and well being. It provides birds with the very high calorie content that they need to handle the high metabolism they have, and suet fat helps keep bird feathers thick and strong for shielding them from winters chill. Suet can be found in any department store with a pet department, or any agricultural outlet. However it can still be a bargain worth chasing down online if you order enough of it at a time, and, avoid the outrageously expensive price some manufacturers ask for what is nothing but pure greasy fat.
Stokes is an old family company that has had their feet in the bird business for quite some time. Nothing they make is either lacking in quality, or not everything that it is advertised to be. Unfortunately they also make some of the most expensive bird food and accessories you will ever come across. Suet is nothing more than the raw beef fat from the loins and kidneys of beef cattle. By its very worth and availability it is very cheap, and can sometimes be available in bulk form from supermarkets and butcher shops. Cakes such as this bought at retail is rendered suet, meaning it is melted down and formed into cakes with various ingredients added. This Stokes suet is just about one of the most expensive blends I have ever come across. At $30 as of this writing for 12 cakes, it is simply outrageously priced and in my opinion, should be avoided, unless money as an object is just not something that exists in your household. Many years of experience with feeding and caring for birds has taught me that birds are very undiscerning customers when it comes to most "quality" blends of just about anything. Suet is just about as basic and elementary a food choice for birds that you will probably ever encounter. And I feel that there is a smarter alternative. You are far better off spending your money on the Suet Plus suet with peanuts available here on Amazon at the link enclosed. It is suet from the same origin, and rendered in the same process as this very much overpriced blend. It also has peanuts added that that is a better high energy treat, and also appeals to every bird that favors feeders.
Lastly Suet Plus cakes are 13 oz each for $1.00, where the Stokes blend is 11 0z for what comes out to over double that price for a case. I highly recommend passing on this choice and checking out the Suet Plus that is just as quality made, and a far better bargain. Either that, or buy your suet locally, or check out the other cheaper alternatives here on Amazon. This Stokes blend is excellent suet, but it's just too darn expensive... I love these cakes! Jun 27, 2007
By J. Hall Made a little differently than the store-bought cakes, they aren't shrink wrapped and don't come in the messy plastic tray you have to squeeze them out of. Instead, just open the top of the package, position over your suet feeder, give a slight squeeze and they pop right out of the wrapper into the feeder. No touching the suet, no mess, and the birds love it too!

KITTY ENTERTAINMENT ! Jul 21, 2008

It took a while for the birds to discover this, but once they did -- they are almost non-stop at the feeder. They are going through a whole cake in less than 2 days. I am supplementing with whole grain bread now (which they completely disdain), and a second feeder for seed food. Both are right outside a window where my kitty stays for hours watching the birds.
Truth in advertising. The product doesn't melt and it is easy to handle. Rip open the package and drop it into the feeder using the bag that it came in. No mess, no fuss. Very happy with it.

Great birdfood May 18, 2009
By Mary Jude F. Schmitz This suet attracts all types of birds and has brought more varieties of birds to my yard than I have ever had before. I would definitely recommend this to all birdwatchers.

A good value Apr 10, 2009
By History Buff These suet cakes have attracted birds to my feeder that don't come to the birdseed feeders. I now regularly attract bluebirds, yellow warblers, and an assortment of woodpeckers. The cakes cost half the price of those in local retail stores, which is good because they are quickly eaten up! I appreciate the package design, which helps to keep your hands free of greasy residue.
