Great gate, but read my review before buying. Mar 24, 2007

"Software Pro"
I just bought this gate because I needed something semi-permanent in my living room to keep my new puppy from running all over the house. My first gate looked very cheap and kept falling down because it didn't have a door and I just propped it against the wall. I needed a gate with a door.
I checked at least 3 different sites besides Amazon for a "rich" looking gate WITH a door. I landed on this one.
PROS:
1.) Looks nice and elegant
2.) The door swings open both ways (very nice)
3.) Brown / tan (much nicer than the plastic grey colors like Grayco)
4.) Solid design (wood and steel, nice)
5.) The gate locks at the top and the bottom at the same time, making it impossible for my puppy to push his way through at the bottom.
6.) Lock is nicely positioned (but see #5 in the CONS below).
CONS:
1.) ONLY the door is wood, ALL of the gate material is metal. Would be nicer is the entire gate was the same wood and the hardware was metal.
2.) The door does not swing 180 degrees open. The door only opens to about 110 degrees so because it's not flush with the gate, my dog or kids sometimes run into it.
3.) The color of the gate does not match the door. It's close and it compliments it, but it's not a match.
4.) The rubber feet that touch the wall (I'm not talking about the adjuster knobs, because they are brown) to hold it in place against the wall are grey. At this price, they should be brown to match the gate. I don't know how the company missed this one.
5.) The handle to open the gate only works in "baby-proof" mode. I which you could deactivate the thumb button and make it so that you only have to lift up on the handle to open. Not the thumb & lift up. Just a convenience thing. It's sometimes a little tricky when both your handles are full with grocery bags.
6.) The screws are shiny silver. They should have painted them brown as well. (Richell, it your reading this, you could have anodized them dark brown like some many other screws, that way they're less noticeable.)
7.) THIS IS THE BIGGY **IMPORTANT** This gate only works in certain segments. Unless you're really handy with tools and a welding torch you must pay attention to this. This gate will ONLY fit on the following openings, NO EXCEPTIONS:
35" to 37" with no side gates (just door)
47" to 49" with one side gate attached
59" to 61" with both side gates attached
When I bought this gate, I didn't understand this and I was lucky that my opening is 47". If it was only 45" I would have had to return this gate. There is no way around this.
Overall this is a quality gate, but just know what you're getting.
I would buy this gate again if I had to make this choice all over.
I gave this gate 4 stars instead of 5 because only the door was wood. If the gates and door were wood, I would have given it 5 stars.

Impressive look that won't ruin your interor design Apr 10, 2007

I bought 2 of these gates plus the additional extensions. My hall way openings are in the "blackout" width dimensions. I was able to VERY easily saw off some of the rails on the extensions and place the included plastic caps over the ends to hide all trace of my handy work.
I have had lots of compliments from visitors to my home about the gates.
If you have a dog that will jump and put paws and claws on these gates they will easily damage the wood work. I'd hate to think what a chewer could do to them.
I was also somewhat disappointed that the extenders were metal and not wood. Definitely there are some improvements that could be made but overall this is the best out there for the moment.

Best Pet Gate Ever Jun 10, 2007
By Beverly Couture I purchased this pet gate to keep my two large dogs confined to the kitchen area. This gate is extremely well constucted, easy to install, compliments my decor and easy to operate. My eight month old Boxer jumps up on it often to see in other rooms but it doesn't budge. It's tall enough that he can't jump over it too and that's a problem I had with the plastic gates. I feel confident when I leave home that when I return he will still be in the kitchen. A great comfort to me since he suffers separation anxiety and has been known to chew and destroy things in my absence. I have never been sorry I spent the extra money and purchased this gate.

Worth the money...almost a 5-rating May 27, 2007
By Dustan Wagner I purchased this gate in mid-March of 2007 because I needed a sure-fire method to keep my three dogs out of our living room while some floor work was being done. I read all of the reviews and looked over the slim pickings at local stores (Target, Petsmart, and many others) and decided upon this one based upon the comments that this one was sturdy and worked well. One word of warning: this gate will not universally fit all openings, although I suspect it fits most standard doorways and openings. Be sure to measure your opening because the extender bolts (rubber-tipped to ensure you don't hurt your wall) only extend out approximately 4 inches on each side, so the gate plus one or both of the extensions needs to be within 8 inches of your opening.
The comments were right: this product is great! It requires a minimal amount of effort to put together--I probably spent 5 minutes--and all of the tools were included. When you first pull it out of the box, don't worry if it looks crooked: it is designed to be a bit wider at the top of the gate (where the handle would connect to the frame) so that it has some natural tension when you put it into place. The way it works is that you have to squeeze the outer edges towards the middle, place the gate into the opening, and then when you release, the tension holds it into place so that you can tighten the extending bolts on the edges. The bolts have large, rotating gripped handles that allow you to fairly easily tighten the bolts. Tighten the bolts on the bottom to get it secured and then go back to the top bolts and tighten them until the gate and the frame are square and the handle latches onto the frame.
The gate is sturdily made of metal and has kept our three 55 lbs-plus-size dogs at bay. The grips and tension design do a wonderful job of holding the gate into place. The only complaint I have, and it is the only reason I didn't give the gate 5 stars (4.9 is about right), is that I had to use one of the gate extensions and it has developed a tiny bend where it bolts to the gate. The gate is still sturdy, but it does have a slight bend forward at that point. Having said that, I would purchase this gate again in a heartbeat.

Beautiful Gate - Watch Measurements! Dec 11, 2009
By Carrie Ordered this gate for an opening of 58 1/2". With the baseboard the bottom was 59". The gate was too big with both sections and no matter what we tried we couldn't get it to fit. If we had taken a section off it would have been too small. We couldn't make it just right :)
The latch is also a little tricky for younger kids. As another reviewer stated it would be nice if you could disable the thumb slide.
It's a beautiful gate and looked great, but it should have more width options. It definitely would have kept my 2 75 pound dogs on their side of the house. Luckily Amazon is great with returns so it wasn't an issue.
