2Disappointing  Apr 02, 2010
I have too many cats, and several require their own diets. I originally bought this flap to allow one cat access to a room so he could eat his own prescription food separately from the other cats. It didn't take long for the other cats to start exploiting it, though. One cat realized he could force his way through by hitting the flap hard enough; the latch would just give way after a while and he would barge on in. I had to get him his own collar after only a week because I was afraid he'd break the door. Another cat realized he could just camp the door whenever my cat that had the collar was near it, since it unlocks. Even with the door set to relatch after two seconds, if my cat with the collar was stuck on one side near the door it would keep unlocking and the other cat would make his way in. Not to mention that the door is very loud when it clicks. We had it installed on a guest room down the hall from our master bedroom and the clicking sounds drove us nuts at night.

So now, after only about two months of use, the door broke from the abuse the cats gave the latch. I was able to take it apart and fix the lock, but since then two of the keys have become corroded from water since they're not waterproof. I give up on this door; even the magnetic cat flap I used before this has lasted longer and done a better job, at half the price, but I needed an infrared door because I had multiple cats with multiple doors and needed different access for everyone. It's sad that there are often so few high-quality products for cat owners out there.

4Much better than the Magnetic Door  Mar 01, 2010
Have 4 cats, 1 of which is a "problem" cat that needs her own space. I set up a downstairs basement room for just her and added one of Staywells Magnetic cat doors which was not that successful. The magnet that fit on the cat collar had to come up to the door just a certain way for the latch to activate and let the cat into the room, if the cat was moving fast as they are likly to do- the cats head would butt up against the door and the door wouldnt open. As you can imagine after seceral times of this the cat would give up and we would have to coax/train her to try it again. (yes I made sure the units batteries were strong).

The Infrared door is well worth the price over the magnetic. It's much more sensitive about activating the door when the cat gets close to it. No more head butts to a locked door. Has worked great for several years now and the only problem is when the battery died it allowed the other 3 cats to gain access (dont ask me how they knew, but the pesky buggers must try on a regular basis). New batteries- Double A's lasted me over a year) and everything is back to normal. An AC adapter would be handy but with batteries lasting so long I'll stick to them. The batteries in the collar also lasted over a year, and I only noticed they were dead when her "private" litter box wasnt getting dirty. They were cheap button batteries and easy to replace.

Came back today to order another collar for one of the other cats so it could share the room. Ours is a "blue" coded key which is 10 dollars more than the yellow key-dont ask me why.

All in all- a really good answer to a pet door that needs to be very selective on who gets in.

1Falls apart!  Nov 11, 2009
Bought door to keep a neighbor bully cat out of my house. When my cats run from the bully, they hit the door before the latch springs. The result is that the battery comparment and doors fall off - leaving the cat door wide open.

Thus - I'm returning this product.

5Cat loves it  Oct 26, 2009
The price was amzing, so thought I'd get it just for a cat door, but it really worked! The cat learned immediately how to use it, and the collar sensor is very light. It's been a year and it's working perfectly.

1Poor durability, not big enough  Jul 23, 2009
At first, I thought all our problems were solved. The door was relatively easy to install and my first impression was "amazing". But it was too good to be true. After a month of use, the tiny motor gave out (unbeknown to us) and all the neighborhood cats had their second meals in our garage.

Second note: after observing our boys learn how to go in and out of the cat door, the actual size of the opening is too small for normal sized cats. It's a struggle for both cats to enter and exit.

Third note: the plastic inside panel that interacts with the locking mechanism is very flimsy. I doubt it would hold up to an aggressive cat-dash or any tampering of a dog or racoon.

I paid $100 for this garbage
