Economical and functional Aug 28, 2008
By Martin I. Widjaja When I bought this, I believe Amazon had surplus of discontinued products, so I got it for around $36 including shipping/handling. Hence my comment "Economical". Normally doggy door like this (size/material) costs you near $100.
This product works really well with my dogs (boxer and mutt), but the petsafe logo on the flap deposits dirt since the dogs go through it all the time. In addition, I haven't been able to find replacement flap in case this one goes bad. Replacing the flap would also involve uninstalling the door, which is a bit of a hassle.
Overall the aluminum frame looks good and strong, but the cover is plastic which was disappointing. The frame itself is actually pretty strong and especially would work well once installed and fit into a door, but the screws are also plastic, so I had to buy metal screws myself.

Pet door review Aug 03, 2008
By L. Kaiser I love the Petsafe Classic Pet Door! I've bought 3 already. The dogs and I love the independence of them having in/out privileges at all times. I feel very secure with the plastic door insert whenever we go out of town. And unless the puppy chews the flap !!! it seals very well and I'm not concerned about the A/C or heat leaking out to the backyard.
The plastic screws contained in the kit work sometimes, not others. If I ever have the need to buy another door, I'll go get some #8-3 inch machine screws to use in place of the plastic ones.

Solid construction- not easy for an amateur to install Feb 11, 2010

I recently received and installed this doggy door into a door at my house. The pros are that it is made with quality construction over most other doors that I saw at Home Depot. I bought the aluminum satin finish dog door which is a nice brushed aluminum frame with a hard plastic door blocker. I bought this item for about $80. For $72 plus tax at Home Depot, you can get the Ideal Pets doggy door, but it is made of a plastic frame and seems to have a slightly less durable construction to them. The only drawback to these doggy doors is that it does seem to take a bit of skill to properly install the door. I had my professional licensed carpenter install the doggy door and it took him about 45 minutes from start to finish to cut a hole in the door, make proper screw holes, and tighten, seal, the doors for a perfect finish. There are a couple of screws by design that stick out of the door, could be finished a little better by the PetSafe company, but otherwise a solid product.

Fantastic Nov 28, 2009
By Android Works brilliantly, both dogs learned to use it in a few days
The 100lb older dog is incredibly timid about pushing open doors etc, but this is big enough that he clears it easily and is totally unafraid of using it.

Not an improvement Feb 13, 2011
By Sondra Weiss I have been using pet safe doors for over 20 yrs. I have a Great Dane, a Doberman and a German Shepherd so the doors get plenty of use. I have had the sliding glass door panel as well as the ones that fits into the door. I have the old double flap system in the door that goes from the laundry room to the garage and it works fine but the U flap wears out. If you reinforce the U shaped outside flap with duck tape and use large washers and wing nuts you can keep the flaps closed pretty well and the flap will not pull out from under the screws, when the dog runs through it and gets a caught, which is a safety thing I guess; when you have 100 lb plus dogs it is not a concern they will just take the flap with them. I have also attacked some extra heavy duty magnets to the old frame. It is not the prettiest thing but it certainly is superior to this new door.
Well I needed another door to go out from the garage into the back yard when I bought this new house and I bought the new and improved door....sorry it is not. The magnets are a little stronger but it leaks on both sides. It is not a good fit at all and the flap is already curving from the dogs heads hitting it. Maybe this will work o.k. for a 20 lb dog but not for my big boys. It keeps the rain and snow out of the garage pretty much but would not work for the door into the house, just to much leakage around the sides for direct inlet. Insects get around it for sure. The flap won't come off but it doe not keep the cold or heat out. It is not any better than the old door, but what are you going to do. I would not think of the animals not being able to go in and out when I am gone.
