Awesome food Dec 24, 2009
By Carla Simmons
"sambasue"
I have been feeding this to my German Shepherd Puppy for 7 months. He is absolutely vibrant and his coat is incredible. He has been growing slowly as is desired in a large breed dog but is in awesome condition. The food is high in nutrients and if overfed at first we had some loose stools, but that has completely resolved with continued feeding. German Shepherds tend to easy GI upset so it is important to go slowly with a food change. I also started buying the adult for my grown dogs. After some ten years raising dogs, this is the best kibble I have fed.

Best in Class Dry Dog Food Jul 19, 2010
By HTBK Pet food has an immense range of quality that you can very roughly categorize into three levels. (1) super cheap food that's basically feeding your dog garbage (1-2 stars); (2) food that's a good compromise on price and quality, containing some ingredients that aren't ideal but overall a healthy product (3-4 stars); and (3) "price is no object" foods that make no compromises (5-6 stars). Orijen doesn't just fall into category 3, it's the best of it. It's expensive, but you will not find a better dog food anywhere. Period.
Orijen is a Canada-based company that raises its own chickens, employs its own fisherman to catch fish and deliver them fresh, uses whole eggs instead of dried egg products, and loads its products with the highest quality ingredients you'll ever find in dog food. It's good for your dog's muscles, heart, coat, skin, and is the most biologically appropriate dry dog food there is. Instead of grains for the carb content that it needs to form the kibble, Orijen uses highly digestible fruits and vegetables with nutritious antioxidants and vitamins.
Check out the first 6 ingredients in this product: Fresh deboned chicken, chicken meal, turkey meal, russet potato, fresh deboned pacific salmon (a natural source of DHA and EPA), herring meal. Meat, meat, meat, good carbs, meat, meat.
Compare that to the first 6 ingredients in Hill's Science Diet Adult Small Bites Dry Dog Food, which I just selected by picking the first large size that came up in a search for "hill's science diet dry dog food." Chicken, ground whole grain corn, ground whole grain sorghum, ground whole grain wheat, chicken by-product meal, soybean meal. Meat, grain, grain, grain, low-quality animal filler like beaks and feet, and more grain. It's loaded with grains that are cheap and known to be difficult to digest, often the cause of allergic reactions in dogs, and not nutritious.
If you want a good compromise product, go for something like Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul Dry Dog Food for Adult Dog, Chicken Flavor, 35 Pound Bag, a very good food that's a bit more affordable than Orijen. If you want the best of the best for your fuzzy-faced friend(s), get Orijen.
Final note: this is extremely rich food. Introduce it very slowly, even more slowly than you normally would a new food, and expect some loose stools during the process. We started with 1/6 new food and upped it by 1/6 every week, so we took a month a half to transition completely to Orijen. That helped a lot.

Digestion issues Dec 13, 2010
By B. Gibbon I wanted to feed my puppy one of the best foods out there and based on the price and reviews, I had high hopes. Unfortunately, he had the runs the entire time he was on it. The vet said it was likely due to too much protein. I added some pumpkin to his diet as recommended by the vet to provide more fiber, but nothing changed. Upon switching feed, the problems stopped immediately. As all dogs are different, I am in no way saying this is not a great food, but it definitely did not work for my 6 month old Flat Coated Retriever. Also, after doing more research it appears that feeding such high protein to a puppy is not recommended for larger breeds although there is still more research being done on this. It may actually be the large amounts of calcium and not the protein. Who knows - all I know is it did not work for my puppy. I have also heard mixing with other food with more grain is an option, but I personally don't see the point in this.

Alaskan Malamute Puppy Sep 11, 2011
By Flyboy I have a 16 week old Alaskan Malamute puppy named Jupiter. I got him at 7 weeks and he was on the bag of Royal Canine that I got from the breeder in Austria. When that bag was almost out at about 11 weeks I switched him to Orijen Puppy Large Breed. He has just finished his first 30lbs bag and he loves it. He looks beautiful and is healthy and happy. I put a lot of research into getting a good dog food for Jupiter and only after doing all of my research did I realize how bad the Royal Canine and all other conventional dog foods are. If you love your dog and want them to live a long and happy life, buy them some good quality food like Orijen. I just can't believe how many people that claim to be dog lovers yet they feed their animals crap dog food. The extra money you spend on the food will save you in vet bills in the long run. Also, I live in Germany and I order the food from WholeHealthyPet.com...It took me a while to find someone who would ship to me and Whole Healthy Pet has been great. So thank you from myself and Jupiter.

Excellent Aug 07, 2011
By dcuellar I have a chocolate lab who I've been giving Orijen to since he was 8 weeks old. His coat has a great shine, his stools look great after the first week, and most importantly...he LOVES it!! I even use it as treats for training and he has been responding better than expected. I feed him 3 times a day, each time 3/4 of a cup, and he is in great shape. My vet loves seeing him and claims he is going to be a big boy predicting over 100lbs.
I did a lot of reading leading up to my choice of food for my pup and I've got to say Orijen looked great on paper. I'm glad I gave them a chance because they have exceeded my expectations. The fact that they have such a great quality food for puppies as well as adults is wonderful. Many of the other organic foods don't offer that.
I will offer this advice though...although this food worked out for me and others who have reviewed it, there is a possibility that it will not work out for you and your pup. If you are going to buy a bag of this food, or any other food you decide on, make sure you buy the smaller size and then do a slow transition into the food. Also, if you are transitioning from another food you've got to realize that Orijen is rich. The richer the food the less the dog has to eat. In other words, it is very easy to overfeed a dog with rich food. On the positive side, this kind of makes up for the high price of the bag being that it will last you longer. Another positive is that he will poop less throughout the day because his body can break up this high quality food better and put it to use. With the cheaper brands you will see higher number of poops because they pack it with grains which run right through their bodies. Orijen is grain-free and if you look at their ingredients their first few are not only meat items, but high-quality ingredients. It's obvious why dogfoodanalysis.com gave this food a 6-star review. Again, I'm glad I gave it a chance.
