Wholesome looking dog food Jun 27, 2007
By N. Beaumont I bought this dog food based on several recommendations. My dog is not impressed though. He refuses to eat it unless I mix it with his old dog food (Purina Lamb and Rice). This has been going on for quite a while so I don't think it's just a resistance to change thing. Plus, he devours the puppy food put out for our other dog if he gets a chance. The puppy, however, loves this Cowboy Cookout and will eat it whenever she finds leftovers.
Overall I like the product. The ingredients list is easy to decipher and the real pieces of fruit and veggies running through it make it look appetizing. And Amazon's price is currently competitive. I just wish my dog liked it as much. I think I might have a future customer in the puppy though when she changes over from puppy food.

Even my finicky Yorkie loves this dry dog food.
Upgrade from Royal Canin? Dec 22, 2011
By Sophie Is this brand considered an upgrade from Royal Canin?
I have a very picky eater and he only ate the Chihuahua breed formula from RC but recently I've heard bad things about RC so I bought a bag of this Merrick food. I love the packaging and the ingredients list looked okay but I think I saw by-products as one of the first ingredients listed. He doesn't like it right now so we have to coax him with his old food and some bits of chicken. I don't know Merrick's reputation. I refuse to buy any brand that is found in a grocery store and I especially refuse to buy Iams due to their exposed testing on animals. The reviews sound great. I wanted a formula for seniors but Petco didn't carry any so I got cowboy cookout. Since eating it he seems a little more active.
Merrick Dog Foods Jul 20, 2011
By Dorcas Merrick 5 star entrees for dogs comes in a variety of sizes (1lb., 5 lb., 15 lb., & 30 lb. bags) & flavors (turducken, puppy plate, senior medley, grammy's pot pie, thanksgiving day, wingaling, buffalo, salmon, & cowboy, etc.).
On average, Merrick costs bet. $1.69-$2.00 lb. Merrick also makes canned entrees which typically cost $1.98 oz. (24/5.5 oz.). It is to be noted that these are online distributer's prices.
Retail prices tend to be somewhat higher. They also make cat food.
Pros:
Most Merrick dry food products do not contain wheat, corn, & rye, etc. or other fillers. Their food does however contain barley & white rice. Merrick touts that their dog food is natural, & it states on the bag that it contains no preservatives.
Their product typically contains natural supplements for vision, breath, joint health, & some biomedical elements.
Cons:
I am not thoroughly convinced that they are truly all natural. On the label they list several questionable ingredients: Thiamine mononitrate, sodium selenite, pyriodoxine hydrochloride, enterococcus faecium, & cobalt proteinate, etc.
Merrick also falls short of the primary ingredient dogs need to maintain health & vitality, & shed reduction--protein. Their products typically contain over 45% whole grains, only 39% premium protein, 7% vitamins & minerals, 2.5% elements, & 6.5% chicken fat.
I tend to err on the side of natural ingredients for my entire household. I like the way Jack Lalanne put when he stated, "If man made it, don't eat it! Eat what God made!"
So, I'm sticking with God made poultry, fish, brown rice, peas, and carrots at between $0.69- $0.99 lb. for my animals.
It's much cheaper per pound, & I know what's in it. Plus, I have never seen a mother wolf feed her pups kibble--exactly what is kibble really?

Best ingredients for the price Jun 06, 2011
By Cindy So far, this brand has the highest quality ingredients that I've found for this price level ($40). Beef meal, pork meal, decent grains like barley and rice, no wheat or corn or significant amounts of junk space fillers like brewer's rice or beet pulp. I supplement it with occasional plain chicken, vegetables, etc.
My dog happily eats it all, but he's not exactly picky. He even stole some straight out of the bag at first. He passed a lot of gas while eating through the first bag (we mixed increasing amounts with his old food over about a week or two), but now on the 2nd bag of this Merrick, it's nothing major.
I'm planning on rotating between the different Merrick flavors or possibly going with Merrick's value brand, Whole Earth, if I like the ingredients.
