my birds like it a lot Jul 14, 2011
By Margaret A. Frick I added a woodpecker feeder recently to my platform feeders. I live in Houston and we are having a serious drought so I was worried about the birds having variety and I was hoping to feed some birds that don't eat seeds. I bought several types of this brand of suet and a cheap variety from the grocery store. The C&S insect variety was devoured by the birds. The other C&S cakes I tried did pretty well, also, including the hot pepper (which squirrels don't like) and the peanut butter. I only tried the "Delight" styles as these don't melt and we get quite hot.
I also tried a cheap variety of suet from the grocery store and the birds did not eat it.
The suet hanger I got is fairly stable and not accessible to squirrels. The birds that like this are some of the same ones that come to my platform feeder--blue jays, red-bellied woodpeckers, and chickadees. But Carolina Wrens also eat from it with enthusiasm and I hadn't been able to feed them before.
Pros: My birds love it Carolina Wrens will eat it It is not getting sticky or melting in the heat
Cons: It's a bit expensive. Shipping for one or two cakes is outrageous, but not too bad per cake if you buy in bulk.
Misc. It took a few days before the birds started using the new suet feeder. They liked it better once I put it on the same pole as the other feeder. If you aren't already feeding birds, it might take awhile for them to come.
You can put a cake of this directly on the tray of a platform feeder and it won't melt through. I did this to get the birds used to it and they ate it readily. On the tray, the cardinals would eat it too. In fact, the only problem with putting the suet on the tray is that the birds were eating it too quickly.
