1Such a disappointment, but we've made it work for us (kind of) :-(  Jul 22, 2010
By Magnum Fan
We have an 85 lb German Shepherd Dog who loves being in our van with us...we just don't want her forcing her way past the kids and into our laps while we are driving!

When installed as shown (with the 12" gap at the bottom near the floor), she just nosed her way under and ended up knocking it over. We flipped it so that the gap is at the top and that solved that part of the problem. We tightened it using the technique mentioned by another reviewer, to pull it away from the ceiling, extend the posts, then force it back into an upright position. Still, the first time our dog laid down against it, it fell down. In order to make it fit the width of our minivan, the tubes need to be fully extended out. Unfortunately, once they are extended very far they are very flimsy and just the weight of our dog's muzzle on the ends (near the curved part) makes the tubes slide out of position and eventually the whole thing falls down.

Like other reviewers, we have had to modify this product to make it work at all. We now use bungee cords around the headrests of the bucket seats in the middle row and hook the cords around the vertical tubes. For $50, we should not be required to modify or supplement the product. This "solution" forces us to bring the barrier all the way to the back of the middle row, when we really only need to confine our dog to half that amount of space.

This product does not work as designed, and if you buy it, plan to modify or supplement before you take your first drive with your dog in tow. Better yet, buy this from a local store so you can try it out and see if it works for you...if not, returning it would be a cinch!

5It does the trick!!  Dec 27, 2009
By Patty
I was thrilled to find a barrier that I could use with bucket seats. At first I had a hard time getting it to stay in place. Eventually I figured out a little trick. If I pull the barrier towards me and adjust it just a little higher, tighten the knob and then push it into place it's snug enough to stay put. Trying to adjust the height while in place is nearly impossible to make it tall enough to stay in place. The only thing I would change about it is make the top tube just a few inches wider to make less of a gap between the seats. The price is very reasonable. This barrier has definately helped make driving to the dog park safer for me. The dogs stay in the back seat where they should be! If you spend a little time working with it so it's the correct height it should stay in place.

3not for big rigs  Mar 26, 2012

I needed something to keep my hyper lab from jumping into my toddlers seats. While I thought this would work the best, it sadly doesn't fit in my ford excursion. It's just too small. Yes, I should have measured before I bought it, I just thought I would give it a try. So I ended up duck taping it to the seat belt anchors. Other than it not fitting, by several inches, it seems like a great idea and it would work well in something smaller, much smaller. You can not use it at the largest setting because it becomes too weak at the meeting joints. Fast shipping was about the only good thing.

5Great for my RAV4  Mar 19, 2012
By K. Goodlin "ccgood06"
This is a great product for a great price. The metal is heavy duty enough, not flimsy. Everything is adjustable and stays put once secured. The only thing is the rubber stoppers on the ends are slippery, so I added some non-slip material between the stopper and my car ceiling. The lug nuts on the bottom section are also pretty big, so I had to cover them with pipe insulation ($1.95 at HD) just in case the dogs bump against them while driving. Other than those small things, this is a great product for keeping the pups in the back of the car.

5Third time's the charm!  Jan 26, 2012

I have a well mannered Standard Poodle and a not so well mannered 5 1/2 MOS old Airedale. My Airedale is over 60 lbs (and growing!). He's insistent upon sitting in the front seat, and he's been known to gnaw on car parts. I tried two different types of nylon mesh screens. Neither lasted more than a couple of days before he found he could easily bend them one way or the other and gain access to the front seat. I saw that GMI made several styles of barriers, but none of the descriptions or reviews answered my questions as to whether they could be installed directly behind the front seat of my Outback with the feet braced on the ceiling and floor of the car. I wrote to GMI with a description of my dog's escape abilities, and got a speedy response asking for some measurements of my car. I wrote back and the recommendation was for the 8 bar travel barrier. It installed quickly and easily in exactly the way I'd hoped. It does not rattle, feels solid and the tubes extend easily to block pretty much any access. So far, it looks like this will do the trick, but I'll come back in a month or so and tell you for sure!
