5Fish prefer Eheim filters  Nov 06, 2005
By C. S. Jones
The Eheim 2217 canister filter is a great workhorse. It provides mechanical, biological, and chemical filtration in a compact and nearly silent package. Like all external canister filters, it's best if you have an enclosed cabinet in your tank stand where it can be kept out of sight.

The instruction manual leaves a little to be desired. The illustrations are small and it's not always obvious which image goes which which instruction. However, once you sort out the various filter elements (coarse and fine filter pads, activated carbon pad, ceramic coarse mechanical filter material, and biological filter substrate) it's straightforward to get set up.

The filter comes with intake and outflow tubing as well as quick-disconnect valves for ease of cleaning. The filter stack must be mostly disassembled when replacing the filter pads, but it is neither complex nor overly time-consuming. The results speak for themselves: clear water, stable conditions, thriving fish. I'm very glad I bought the Eheim.

5Wouldnt even bother to run a tank with a different canister filter  Aug 30, 2011

You may think eheims are too expensive, but the classic models are worth every penny. Anyone who has owned one will agree, and there are countless threads on countless fishkeeping sites with countless people that agree. I've owned or used every brand of filter, and I wouldnt waste my time or money with any other canister filter. The newer eheims...I dont know... but the classic ones are fantastic and I would buy nothing else. They come with (the best) media, 2 doubletaps, and if you wait for the right sale or deal, can be gotten for the same price as comparable filters from other brands. Just pick one up and you can tell its made with so much higher quality materials, which over time really matters. The tubing is strong, the plastic is strong, its perfectly designed, etc.
There is no media bypass so all water gets treated. Very low power, efficient pump. Most filters get about 50% of their advertised flow rate or less. The 2217 gets 80% or more (i've personally tested many of them - this figure is without the spray bar, which i never use).

The double taps make it very easy to clean, and if you buy a couple media bags for $1, it makes rinsing the ehfisubstrat (little bio balls) much easier. I've set up 20+ aquariums in the past year for friends, friends of friends, coworkers, etc and I always tell them to not even bother with a tank over 20 gallons if they don't have an eheim canister filter.

You also don't have to open or clean them for 3 to 6 months (or even a year) at a time, and they will keep your aquarium crystal clear. They also make it possible to go much longer without water changes before there are negative consequences. I can go on and on about different ways they are better than everything else. You can do it the hard way and try a different brand, and maybe itll be fine for you, but if you ever own a classic eheim you will see just how much better it really is.

Oh, they are very very close to SILENT. Exponentially quieter than all the other brands of filter

5Well worth the money  Jan 01, 2009
By J. Helton
I just purchased a Eheim filter for my 125 gal tank. I already had a emperor 400 and a fluval 404 on the tank, but wanted to replace the fluval. I wasn't impressed with that filter. The eheim can't be beat. It is very quiet. I can't even hear it running. The only way to tell it is running is to watch the water movement. It has only been on the tank a week but I can already tell a difference. I am planning on purchasing a second one.

The only drawback is that the instructions are very difficult to follow. In fact they don't tell you step by step how to hook the filter up. I found the following website that has a step by step video that will help. It is a little fast you will need to pause and repeat. http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/eq...-opinions.html

Overall the extra hassle in installing it is worth it. Eheim's are quality filters that do not break down every other day. Money well spent.

5simpler is better  Feb 24, 2011
By Eriocaulon
The Classic series is my filter canister of choice for small to medium tanks. There is no fancy heating element, uv sterilization, pump primer or quick detach body--and that is a good think. You have an input that goes towards the bottom and a outlet at the top. Priming the unit properly is key, so follow the instructions--it is not hard, especially if your intake tube is full of water. My unit came with quick detach adapters and media. The quick detach hose adapters work very well and spill just a table spoon of water when detached. I use this unit on my 58gal freshwater tank and clean it every 3-6months.

CONS: On the 2217, there is a large o-ring that seals the edge. After a number of years, this will need replacing to the tune of about $15 or so. You can condition the seal with silicone plumber's grease before it completely goes. The impeller shaft is ceramic and easy to break. If you don't have to clean the impeller or it's housing, don't! Most noise is from lack of priming/air and not from the impeller getting dirty. Impeller shaft, $10.

PROS: simple design. very low potential for leaks. exceptionally quiet. parts are available although typically must be ordered online. large media chamber. proven durability.

Other canisters that I have tried but did not like as much: Rena Filstar XP3 (leak), Eheim ProII 2026 (leak, temp/heat failure, primer pump fail)

Well I have this filter and I have no leaks, after clening I always use some vasoline on all O rings, You will get leaks reassembling the filter with out putting some kind of lube on the O rings , Dry o rings will get cut or broken if not had some kind of lube put on them
