Brome 1015 Squirrel Buster Classic

The patented Squirrel Buster technology is truly squirrel proof. Thousands of delighted bird lovers have confirmed it. The Squirrel Buster Classic has openings in the wire grid that align with the seed ports and provide birds access to the seed. When a squirrel climbs onto the feeder, its weight automatically forces the grid down, closing access to the seed ports. Squirrels and many large birds are foiled but not harmed in any way.

  • The Squirrel Buster Classic is guaranteed to be squirrel proof

  • Plenty of surfaces for small clinging birds, such as nuthatches, to grip

  • Removable perches offer feeding options for chickadees, finches and sparrows

  • Larger birds and squirrels are thwarted by the patented Squirrel Buster technology

  • No harmful to the animals in any way

4Really works  Dec 01, 2007
By A. Wertheim "werthla"
This is truly a squirrel proof feeder. I have two of these. Only complaint is that the spring mechanism broke on one of them while cleaning and it's toast. Just treat it gently when cleaning. I am getting another one since it's the only feeder I have seen that keeps squirrels off. As for the critters swinging the feeder around to disperse seeds, this is a very small "squirrel tax" to pay. Put some seed on the ground for our bushy tailed friends and be thankful they are not ON the feeder.

1Doesn't Work  Jul 16, 2007
By MMC
I have a problem with red squirrels and chipmunks. It keeps the fatter squirrel off the feeder, but the skinnier two just snake their hands in and snatch out the seeds. It doesn't stop the chipmunks at all; they're too small to trigger the weight limit. The fat squirrel sits at the bottom eating the seeds knocked down by the two smaller ones having to work so hard.

Worse, because it takes the squirrels more effort to get the seeds, they spend twice as much time working at the feeder. The seed doesn't go down as quickly but there's no chance for birds to come feed.

This might work for heavier gray squirrels but it's a total bust for red squirrels and chipmunks.

2Squirrels are smarter than the makers of this feeder.  Aug 26, 2007
By Conor Leahy "Web Writer and Editor"
No, maybe squirrels can't get inside the feeder, but they don't have to. All they have to do is shake it or set it to swinging, and seed goes all over the place. Then they take what seeds they want out of the resulting mess and leave the rest to rot. They can trash a feeder's worth of seed within a week. I'll be looking for yet another feeder as soon as I can afford it.

5Great for squirrels, but not raccoons...  Apr 12, 2008
By Dr. Nancy E. Rossiter
I live in an area with a lot of old oak trees, so the community has a huge squirrel population. I have had problems with the little furry guys before - they can literally empty an entire feeder in an hour. I have purchased more expensive models before, but the squirrels figured out a way to hang upside down and raid the seed. This product works extremely well - it doesn't stop the squirrels from trying, but they get discouraged after awhile and jump down, leaving the seed alone.

One morning I woke up to find the shepherds hook I had the bird feeder hanging on bent to the ground and the feeder in the middle of the yard on its side. We had a windstorm during the night, so I figured it blew down. The next day I woke up to the same thing - and the feeder was completely empty.

In addition to a large squirrel colony, we also have a large raccoon colony. The raccoons managed to push the pole to the ground, remove the feeder from the hook, and placed the feeder on its side, so that the levers that close off the seed when the weight of a squirrel lands on it were not operational....and proceeded to empty the contents of the feeder.

I have been able to overcome this problem by greasing the pole the feeder is on....the raccoons can't get a grip on the pole to push it to the ground.

Overall, this product is great for what it sets out to do... keep squirrels from hogging all the seed....just watch out for raccoons!

4Not as good as the Squirrel Buster Plus....  Jul 06, 2007
By M. Bergeron "Muziclvr"
...as there is no tension adjustment on this classic model, so you cannot 'fine-tune' it to reject larger 'pig' birds like starlings and the like. Also, unlike the Plus model which completely closes off the feed port then weighted down, this classic model has a coarse mesh that only partially blocks the feed port. It keeps the squirrels out, but the nuscence birds still are able to feast.

To be fair, Brome never claims this model can be adjusted nor do they recommend it to keep larger birds off the feeder.

So, if squirrels are your only problem, this less expensive model will indeed fit your need. If you are looking for more control over who is working your feeder, spend the extra money for the Plus model.
