I found these to work as expected. If they were another 2", they would be even better.

I bought an expensive pair of boots several years ago: ankle height with side gussets but no zipper. Because of the height of the boots, I could not pull them on. And so they sat in my closet. They had a stitched loop in the back. When I got the boot hooks, I cut the sticking in the loop and voila....I could wear my boots.
