5Great Bio Filter Enhancer. (Does not remove NITRATE)  Nov 11, 2011
By Tigs
This does not remove NITRATE! It removes Ammonia and Nitrite. The details on Amazon page says it removes nitrate and this is wrong. Many people new to the hobby confuse Nitrite and Nitrate. Understandable since these sound almost identical. I just wanted to clear that up. To remove nitrate you will have to perform water changes or buy some aquatic plants that will remove a little bit of nitrate. The bacteria only consume the nitrite and ammonia.

All this product does is add a lot more surface area for the bacteria to live on thus increasing the biological load your tank can handle.

I also want to add that this does not make your water cloudy. If you do not rinse the pellets off as the directions say then you will introduce very fine white dust to the tank. If you rinse the pellets real good until you no longer see powder coming off you should be fine.

This is a very good product overall.

5BioMax for Aqua Clear 50  Aug 20, 2010
By Mike P. "Balut Eating Champ"
Way better than the one it came with the AquaClear 50 when I bought it. This one comes in a clothe net bag, so there's no cutting or transferring the rocks, just rinse and drop. Although it kind of takes a bit longer for the beneficial bacteria to build up than the old one I got that has a plastic net.

5BioMax does NOT create cloudy water  Nov 27, 2009
By Steven C. Dixon II
This product does NOT create cloudy water if used properly with the Hagen AquaClear filter. Its part of the filters 3 stage filtration system, why would anybody think it would CREATE cloudy water? The BioMax reduces ammonia and nitrate levels which are common causes of cloudy water. Saying it creates cloudy water is just absurd.

4My Fish give it 'All fins up!'  Oct 31, 2011
By Chaplin Hawkeye
My 'local' pet shop said they carried these products when I bought the Aquarium filter system. Wrong!! So thanks to Amazon.com I can have an upgrade in filtration and don't have to travel seventy miles to who-knows-where to get my supplies. Thank heavens for 7/11, but, what about Amazon.com?

5Beneficial Bacteria Paradise  Aug 14, 2011
By ZHENGMAO YANG
After weeks of use, the biomax pellets fill up with brown-tan growth. It is probably beneficial bacteria, but the net bag tends to grow them and some algae too. I threw my first one away after ~10 months of use because the pellets started to chip. The new pellets probably chip less and will last longer.
