It's good while it works, so keep it clean May 13, 2010 This filter actually worked great, until I neglected to clean it for a month. After that the impeller conked out and i bought a new one but still no deal. I looked it up and tried to super clean it with white vinegar, but so far no deal. i wish that it was like my marineland filter and had a second "cover" to make sure things didn't get into the impeller, but if you make sure to clean out the impeller ever couple of weeks, I guess you won't have a problem.
When it worked, it was great. It, along with my Marineland Emperor Filter 280 kept my water pretty crystal clear. That's probably because I'm using them both on a 55g, but I figured better too much than too little, with such messy fish. Tis was probably more of a powerhouse than the marineland, because when it died, the water started turning green and getting funky. I recommend it, but would also recommend having another one for the other side of the aquarium it you have messy fish.
This filter does the job! And then some. May 11, 2010 So I recently did the hunt for a new power filter for my 55 aquarium. I saw alot of positive reviews for this filter so I bought one... Wow. This simple but POWERFUL filter does an exceptional job filtering my tank.
I also have a Peguin 200 power filter. Now this filter is what drove me to get a new one. You have to purchase insert filters and replace them regularly, which can be expensive and I think even wasteful. Also, the biowheel would often stop spinning after a few days.
So when I was looking for a new filter I wanted one with easy maintenance and would also allow you to rinse and reuse.
This aquaclear filter runs powerful, cleans the water using the three important steps, and allows me to customize my media inside it.
Looking at my tank now, I have both the new Aquaclear 70 running on one end, and my Penguin on the opposite. The water is like glass and the fish do indeed to be floating in nothing.
I have a overstock tank, lots of big and messy fish and lots of cories who snuffle along the bottom at all times. The water is pristine and there is no odor from the tank.
Really impressed with the filter.

LOUD! Apr 15, 2010 This is the loudest filter I have ever and I would not have purchased it had I known, it's VERY annoying!

Expected better for such high ratings Aug 11, 2009 Although this model may be good in terms of dependability and cleaning efficiency, it is not quiet nor is it user-friendly in terms of maintenance. The old Whisper it was supposed to replace is better on both fronts. The pump on the AquaClear 70 could be quieter, and the water falls almost a couple of inches in the air before hitting the water-- and yes, the tank is full to half-inch from the top. I guess it was designed this way to promote aeration of the water, but it is noisy.

Great Filter Apr 24, 2009 This filter is great, but the biological part of this filter needs to be replaced (i believe 2-3 months), I don't know if the biomax will lose performance if you dont. Other than that it is a great mechanical filter. When compared to penguin's filters this filter wins in mechanical filtration, but the penguin in biological. They also make the same amount of noise, but this one makes alittle more because it requires a higher water level than the penguin filters. However, one thing in this filter that the penguin doesn't have is the flow control which is really nice b/c sometimes i will move filters around to smaller to bigger tanks. Oh and this option let's you reduce more impurities out of your water (if you want to). Other than that it still has the same restarting problems as the penguin filters.
